Claims of a large number of additions and changes to the original scriptures have been made.

Of course they have.However they do not stand up to scrutiny. In his book The Bible and Archæology, British textual critic Sir Frederic Kenyon wrote concerning the Christian Greek Scriptures: “Both the authenticity and the general integrity of the books of the New Testament may be regarded as finally established.”
Does it make any sense for Christians to put their life on the line for preaching the resurrection of Jesus if it was not a fact. Jewish opposition has a hard time explaining how the events fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus were foretold in the very Scriptures they treasured.
(Acts 17:1-3) They now traveled through Am·phipʹo·lis and Ap·ol·loʹni·a and came to Thes·sa·lo·niʹca, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. So according to Paul’s custom he went inside to them, and for three sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving by references that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, saying: “This is the Christ, this Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.”
