I think the idea of blue chips is probably going out of fashion. The old idea of buying BHP and putting in the bottom draw for 30 years may be low risk, but not reflective of the current environment. How many of the top 10 stocks from 10 years ago are still in the top 10. What will be in the top 10 in 10 years time?
If you are a long term (5 yr) then I agree with Value_Hunter. Will the company be around in 5 years time? If not, will it be taken over or go broke?
Everything is faster now. The sharemarket is no different.
