For me the indication I'm looking for to tell me flaring is going on will be one or both support vessels will start to move either in circles around the rig at an even distance from the rig, cutting laps around the rig , or doing passes in straight lines up and down alongside the rig....

They will maintain a position at least 500 mtrs from the rig and be doing this for a period of at least 24 hours or more..

The flare burns at a temp of somewhere around 2500*c I believe...(don't quote me...). And the noise is like standing beside an A380 at full noise....

Guys on the rig will be doing spot checks with laser thermometers, fire fighting teams are on standby and anything in the area with be moved, or covered over to help protect them from the intense heat put out during the flaring.

Everything else on the rig stops during this time.....
