Diligent, IMO your memory of the Whitlam years is grossly distorted and unsupported by facts that poster Glug has repeatedly posted on this forum showing that despite the Global Oil Crisis that the Budget was in great shape.

What the reactionaries of the time resented about the Whitlam era was that he re-distributed government spending [eg. NO more Vietnam War] and sought to transform Australia from riding on sheeps' back to a more highly educated, services economy.

From terminating conscription and our involvement in the Vietnam War to kick-starting revolutionary improvements in areas ranging from urban development to The Arts; Whitlam's government is without peer.

Of course, true to form the reactionaries of the time coped very poorly with being sacked by voters and with control of the Senate forced Whitlam back to the people not once, but TWICE [that is what you confuse with chaos - brought on by the same destructive negativity that defined Tony Abbott' political career].

In taking cheap pot-shots about the private lives Junie Morosi and Jim Cairns you have conveniently overlooked all of the private scandals involving conservative political leaders before and since! No surprise there though!
