The big boys do make mistakes. They don't always get to avoid having to cough up.

The mistakes can be commercial in overestimating the vulnerability of another party, or they can make legal mistakes in failing to get an essential clearance. Sometimes it's a combination of both. Early on in my career I assisted a friend successfully litigate an intellectual property breach they thought they'd get away with. They threw everything they had at us, tried to bully their way out of it and still lost. It was quite a stressful time and I bailed out of the UK before after many delays, we finally went to trial (and the onset of winter) but I was there for the preparation. My friend ended up becoming MD of the complainant company he was working for.

It still comes down to how essential the process is (does the device function without M&G? if not, uh oh),
and legal realities (no launch without licensing agreement and royalties, did they try to negotiate a cheap deal and fail, if not, uh oh). If no agreement is in place then their timelines become oppressive to their getting a cheap deal.

If you closely read my previous post you will see that what I'm saying is contingent on all these factors. I'm not assuming they all necessarily apply and how essential M&G is to the process is critical. But we are in the business of speculating in here and there seems to be a reasonable argument to run here. Also people's recollections of GC's responses seem to vary. I think he's being very cagey about POC1. That doesn't mean it's entirely off the table. It could mean the reverse.

In any case, just don't tell me that you can't take on the big boys and win.
