IMO Sometimes it does and sometimes it's positive. ie. Traders who usually trade Blue Chips or at least big Market Cap companies sometimes look elsewhere for a few trades when the markets are in turmoil. And so all of sudden trending specs can have random volume arrive without news which does the whole self-fulfilling prophecy thing of moving the stock into a breakout which gets everyone's attention and bang there's a crazy 3 bagger. This volatility is often repeated a couple of times through a newly trending sector until Big MC Land goes green again, trendy spec stocks lag and someone suggests the trending bubble or boom is over.
And the specs that are not in the trending sector or the micro-moment will often lose 10 to 50% when the market is retreating.
Ouch!
Oh, nearly forgot, then there's the recovery. After a good dose of stock flu, the little specs should come back to life and the favourites often put back on some of the weight they have lost, making it a very pleasant and fun trading week with lots of simultaneous small runners.
Happy trading
