I have nothing against this guy, I would assume he has served our country well in the defence force but I would agree with most that he has done little to deserve this award. At best he just confirmed defence laws that were already in place to curb embarrassing media attention on the defence force at the time over those issues. Isn't that just doing your job at that level? Sure they got rid of some bad apples but it was more of a PR stunt to maintain the defence reputation and keep up recruitment.
As for his recent comments, I would assume it is an indicator that he is looking to get involved in politics to some degree in the future. Picking controversial subject matter and trying to champion causes. Regardless on your view of the matter, Turnbull would surely have at least been swayed to choose him for his Republican sentiment.
Regardless happy Australia day all. Whatever your thoughts at least we can all voice it openly in our country.
