AntN, I've no doubt that some 'people smugglers' are unworthy of being seen as anything other than traders in human misery.
But, as per your post, we should never forget that were it not for some incredibly brave people who smuggled Jews from their tormentors; that the Holocaust would have been even worse than it was.
IMO the so-called 'people smugglers' and their trade is NOT the problem, we're just barking up a gum tree.
Whereas the Allies recognised the root cause of the problems in Europe sometime in the early 1940s and with Japan when Pearl Harbour was bombed; our pollies are blind to what is driving people in their millions to flee places like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan; even after the lessons our hideous war in Vietnam should have taught us.
