Rabbitoh, you just described the situation my wife and I lived with throughout our working lives. Our own kids are now living exactly that scenario and watching retirement being pushed further away and increasingly interfered with.
IMO our pollies have collectively screwed up big time by enabling the already very wealthy to abuse concessions such as those for superannuation, capital gains, FBT, negative gearing, trusts, etc. By enabling welfare for the wealthy our pollies have transferred the taxation burden everwhere except where it should be.
That we've done so little to address corporate tax avoidance and opted instead to slug battlers with Howard's 10% GST is an enduring disgrace and a major corruption of our social democracy.
