Sometimes traders wish to keep SP low so they can accumulate more stock at lower prices. If they believe stock price will increase in the future, accumulation in this manner is of benefit to them.
By selling their own stock at cheap prices, they can scare traders into selling their own at lower prices. Additionally, stop losses may be triggered which will also push stock price lower.
