Freshwater is more dense than salt water, so it is sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Where else would it go? And because there is more water there it is pressing down on the crust there and pushing up islands like Tuvelu.
I reckon my theory is as good as anybody elses.

The vikings populated parts of Greenland for a couple centuries back around the time of Eric the Red. Grass grew there. So where did the water go then? What was flooded by 6 or 7 meters? London was a town on the banks of the Thames then - no record of a flood.

One would also presume glaciers retreated about the same time as did the Greenland icecap at that time. No cars or industry around then to cause the melt.
    Perhaps it was woodsmoke.
