LC, I couldn't agree more, not a conscience vote as such, but a vote in accordance with the wishes of his electorate.
In the 80's I remember a public meeting where one of the audience was trying to get the local member to state whether he voted according to the wishes of his electorate, or the party line. We all knew what the answer was but he dodged and weaved giving an straight forward answer and waffled on about the importance of party unity.
The two party system is based on the assumption that there are two alternate roads that the country can be taken down, since communism has been discredited, most people now realise that is not the case any more. It is about time that we found a better system that allowed us all to have a bigger say, and accept more of the responsibility for the state of our society.
