    I'm pretty sure governments (here at least) won't forego historically lucrative fuel taxes - they'll find new ways to extract revenue from the movement of people/goods across the "tyranny of distance" (even suburban) when it becomes worthwhile. My point was that fair fuel tax application may become so complex in the case of EVs, (especially with home generation/storage) it could hinder take-up.

    I think the best near-term opportunities for EVs lie within emerging markets/nations, where appropriate infrastructure can be implemented early on and where there are fewer vested interests. Big lithium markets there.

    On automation affecting employment...yes, here now and spreading rapidly - problems with no easy answers. Re-skilling pressures will increase - can only hope our training systems are up to it.
