re: qantas It's not actualy JUST "after" the divd Ex-date...you simply need to hold the stock at risk for at least 45 days (ex trade days), before or after...
The problem with a stock like QAN is that it tends to have a high % of foreign shareholders who tend to sell off prior to the divid date and buy back in after it...thereby providing ex-div support.
