Son recently did an experiment for physics. Average time for the amber light at lights in the following speed zones (Brisbane) was:
50kph 3.6s
60kph 3.9s
70kph 3.95s
80kph 5.1s
The 70kph one seems a bit tight.
Average stopping distances for three cars from 60 kph with reasonable pressure on the pedal, including reaction time, was:
Peugeot 306 46.8m
Peugeot 406 39.0m
Nissan Patrol 50.2m
No excuse for not stopping in time, although in a 70 zone it would be a bit tight. But you could press harder on the pedal.
