He is not in gaol because "he was too dumb to defend himself". He is there because he was guilty, acknowledged that he was, pleaded guilty and saved all the witnesses from having lived through the horror all over again (not that he did so for that reason, too psycho for that), and he was facing the prospect of his low IQ being trotted out for all to hear, so just pleaded Guilty. He wanted to die some sort of 'hero'. Attention seeking is often part of the personality of inadequates and he was in possession of information on mass murderers in USA and followed them avidly. He thought it was a way of making his mark on the world. Poor sod. What a pity he was born.
