"For months Bill Shorten has been quietly negotiating a fog of early-morning sweat, fruit, muesli and restraint as the Labor leader has shed a heroic amount of weight in the lead-up to the election.
After a low-key fitness and dietary campaign starting last year, it may never get better for the Labor leader as he trades blows with that other high-profile fat-shredder, Malcolm Turnbull.
While the Prime Minister went through an equally impressive weight-loss program in 2011-12, Mr Shorten’s metamorphosis has put him in that weird zone that most late-40s men can relate to: lose any more weight and Shorten, 49 this week, will look gaunt.
Gain any more and Peak Bill will be in danger of lurching back into the territory of Pie Shop Bill.
For a Prime Minister with a relentless inability to sell a tight message, Mr Turnbull has a succinct lesson for everyone wanting to lose weight. “Eat less,’’ he said while in the midst of one of his several girth-reduction programs.
Neither Mr Shorten nor Mr Turnbull are particularly athletic men, certainly not in the league of Tony Abbott, but Mr Shorten has been valiant in his attempts to run himself into shape, losing at least 10kg and, if his mates are right, up to 15kg.
Mr Shorten already has run 630km this year, which translates to more than 150km a month — a robust schedule that puts him at the middle-to-upper end of the exercise equation. But as the saying goes, the middle-aged can’t outrun what they eat."

I am quite prepared to eat my words re this - it appears that Shorten has been doing this for a while before the election, so I will admit I was wrong over this issue.
