GTL project in the NT

NT budget is mooted to provide $500,000 for a Gas to Liquid (GTL) project appraisal. A GTL processing and refining facility would turn cheap natural gas into quality petroleum products - diesel, and petrol etc. Chief Minister Giles has long campaigned against sky high fuel prices in the Territory, caused by a near monopoly of supply. Diesel has been about 20 cents more expensive per litre than elsewhere and persisted at this level without a clear cost driver to justify the greater price. A GTL plant would drive down prices and provide a large economic boost for the NT.
