You are quite entitled to stand by your interpretation that the board members are not travelling to the US but be mindful that you may end up with a fair bit of egg on face.
There is, in my view, NO ambivalence in the 20 May announcement that:
"the company is currently conducting meetings with institutions in North America and Hong Kong. In attendance at these meetings is Dr Wenjun Sheng along with joint CEO’s Athan Lekkas and Chris Wood as they discuss recent developments in the Company and opportunities going forward".
Grammatically speaking, the "in North America and Hong Kong" relates to these "meetings", not "institutions".
If the writer had intended to convey that the meetings were being held in Asia with US and HK-based companies, the wording would have been "the company is currently conducting meetings with North American and Hong Kong-based institutions". But it didn't - so why are you trying to pretend that?
As well, "currently" is of no relevance to your argument. There is nothing in the sentence that suggests that 'currently' refers to an exact moment. In fact 'current' can relate to a long time period - current year, current decade, current millenium etc etc. In this case, I would suggest it refers to the current travel itinerary, covering both US and HK. That is, the whole itinerary is "current", irrespective of where it starts or finishes, with all stages being "current".
If you have any doubts, I would suggest you refer to Fowlers Modern English Usage, rather than to yourself, for the 'last word'.
