They are using the NOAA ncep reanalysis 2 modeled package.
Redrockgeo's comment on lack of data is 100% spot on.
The only comprehensive data for the Arctic is Satellite data to my knowledge. And NCEP do use sat data to my knowledge.
Other than that there is very limited coverage. As is observed even by NASA 250KM grid box data. I.E. One station can cover up to 250 kilometers.
ERSSTv4 data is clear that it does not have DATA for the Arctic. Below is ocean sst data only. GREY is missing Data.
