Your capital has diminished when you are sitting on a loss and you are most likely missing other opportunities when you cling onto losses. They had a nice comparison to that statement on the glasshouse the other day: Your uninsured house doesn't lose value when it burns down, cause you haven't sold it. So you haven't lost anything.
