After fighting amongst themselves for the last thousand years or so, the EU was an idea to bring the continent together in one of mutual dependance and security.
Given the history of Europe, I would doubt that the security of Europe would be served by thirty or so independent states going their own way. Would the people prefer to give their lives for their 'nutjobs' in another European War ?

Putin I think would be rubbing his hands in glee.
