Who do you think pays for Medicare? The fairy at the bottom of the garden?
Medicare will only be strong with maximum work place participation and every one paying their fair share of tax.

In a lot of respects people may be more concerned with looking after their own health if the have to fund a contribution towards the doctor's visit. I know it costs us $65 to see our GP (minus the rebate from Medicare).
