Pensioners saw it for what it really was - a cap on the medicare bulk billing rate lead to them paying money at the doctors appointment. My local doctor bulk billed always but started charging everyone for the difference between the bulk bill rate and his fees. Before pensioners didn't pay, now they do. Call it what you want but the bottom line is doctors who use tto bulk bill now charge people payments because the govt capped the rebate. And prescription rebates also fell putting pensioners out of pocket. So the old who generally vote Liberal switched sides - my mum did for one.
Then NG took the young vote - quite simple, MT's dumb policy not to do anything on NG cost him a tonne of votes. As I said been held hostage to the right has caused this dilemma. Even limiting NG deductibility of interest payments above rent received to $50,000 in total (roughly one to two investor properties) he would have won this election out right. The guy is a clown.
As it sits, LNP is in serious trouble based on latest AEC figures (at best minority govt at worst in opposition) and the Senate is a dog's breakfast. In a joint sitting even if LNP is in govt they will not get the legislation that caused this DD.
