Pretty sure Australia's 38th richest person (2014) would disagree over whether it was a failure.  The company was worth $2B when he retired in 1992 at that time Orbital had been making profits :

And if the orbital engine didn't reach the heights hoped for (it is still used in 2-stroke applications (DYOR)).

However this hasn't stopped Ralph and he is still a renowned engineer - so don't apply your usual negative brush to tar the man.
