What is the device? To me it reads as a pacemaker like implantable device that has leads and probes that stimulate aortic baroreceptors at the correct time in heartbeat. Ie use constriction and dilation of arteries to invigorate blood flow using body's natural method rather than a cuff ??
Pressure or electrical stimulation?? I am assuming electrical. they do refer to probes?? I am assuming the probes will stimulate the nerves behind the barareceptors so it will be electrical. There has been a lot of research on such so I think results of trial data will be much easier to get to endpoints as they are a isolated approach. Drugs used to control blood pressure work globally in the body and I think that SHC has discovered that after a drug has stimulated or depressed the whole body's blood pressure baroreceptors and caused side affects SHC can stimulate the aortic ones and create higher blood flow and health benefits that are easily measurable ??
Cheap simple , quick to develop and due to very low power requirement ( lots lower than pacemakers) a fully implantable will be long lasting, small and cheap. All technology exists and if trial succeeds expect bids from both blood pressure pharma who will want to bury teh technology and pacemakers manufactures who will want to adopt it as a extension of current line up.
Hope they have the patents covered and if not the big boys will be muscling in fast
This is going to be interesting - medtronic should sponsor this trial ??? Very cheap for them to get foot further in door and get a blockbuster product to market very fast
Drug / pharma will be shocked at this announcement as it will enable SHC to provide a complementary device that will allow for different dosage of their drugs and to get rid or risks and side affects of the drugs and possibly give a massive change to quality of life . maybe they should be the sponsor for the trials? Could make existing blood pressure drugs off patent back on at high margin with a combination therapy - big profits
