To your point though, I'm not sure you're right. I think voters are even more detached and punitive now as three years ago, and will kick out a government they see as dysfunctional just as readily as they did then. As (almost) always, it will be the government that loses voters rather than the opposition winning.

Ok then, how about this angle ...
If Shorten maintains the rage instead of being the statesman and setting policy debate, when he takes the PM role next election he can expect a bloody rough time and no doubt a hostile senate!
