Trading my car in for a new car.....

Can anyone help explain to me what happens to the unused part of my Car Registration paid about 7 weeks ago for a period of 12 months. My poor old car is now 26 years (yes, I know, Happy Birthday) and the offered Trade In is less than the cost of the remaining Registration fee. That's a bit insulting isn't it? Should I just keep my old car and grow potatoes in it instead?

ps Seems like someone gets a free car and registration for a couple of months. That surely is unfair?
