Duty; based on what's been reported thus far, what seems to have been most important is what you just alluded to - Mohammed Bouhlel's nasty and violent behaviour, his alcohol abuse, mental health problems that required medication and treatment by psychologists, the disintegration of his marriage and separation from his family in Tunisia.
Reports thus far suggest that if he was a religious fanatic no-one is admitting to knowing about it, least of all French security authorities. I haven't come across a single report yet providing evidence that he regularly prayed at his local mosque or observed Muslim practices such as Ramadan.
Like other murdering mongrels, Bouhlel may have taken the coward's way out of citing religion to justify atrocity.
Sadly for the authenticity of Andrew Bolt's inflammatory article, Bouhlel was not a spiritual leader, was not admired by anyone at all really and it even appears that he managed to drive that truck through the crowd all by himself.
