Because you want to acquire it for the least amount and they cant let others know your max
If you bid 10 of your 20 max and noone comes along...its yours for 10
I think its a marvelous sytem in that regard
I have other big issues with Ebay...particulalry that Ebay Oz is one of the few Ebay sites in the world that doesnt allow the seller to set a reserve except for cars etc...
Ebay tells us, the sellers, to start te price low to encourage buyers but then there's the real risk it will get nowhere near what the seller needs to get.
Unfortunately this trains the buyers that the can get, at times, new gear for unmarketable prices
