THE British water distribution group Thames Water has been sold to a consortium led by Macquarie Bank, the utility's parent company RWE announced on its website today.
Thames Water was sold for £8 billion ($19.82 billion) to Macquarie (mbl.ASX:Quote,News), which beat out bids from the Qatar Investment Authority, British investment group Terra Firma and the Australian energy group Alinta.
It is the biggest distributor of water in Britain with 13 million clients, of which the majority are in London and the southeast of the country.
Its owner put it up for sale at the same time as its American subsidiary, American Water.
