Says who? Population and per capita wealth is not a simple relation. Most of Australia's wealth is derived from mining and agriculture, so immigration dilutes per capita wealth from these sources. Paying three times as much for your water and huge amounts for the infrastructure necessary to support more people hardly increases per capita wealth either.
Cutting immigration would cut jobs in the housing industry, but with the mining industry crying out for workers this could work out well.
