The problem is that a Solar Tower is more expensive than solar panels with higher upkeep. The solar tower canopy alone covers several square kilometers compared to hectares for solar panels.

Based on a preliminary solar tower cost of $800 million, and a 200 Megawatt output, it will cost $4,000 per kilowatt to build a solar tower. Any this is even before any engineering details are completed.

Compare it to the known costs of solar farms. For example AGL is building a 155 Megawatt solar panel system at Nygan and Broken Hill for a total cost of $440 million. This is $3,000 per kilowatt.
