re: tide can only be held for a short while Why is Imugene focused on vaccines for the Poultry Market?
There are over 48 billion broilers (meat producing birds) produced every year world wide. Over half of these birds are intensively reared in large scale commercial sheds. Imugene products target the large market for products to prevent illness and improve productivity on these large commercial farms. Poultry products make up approximately 25% of the global annual spend on animal health products. The majority of expenditure in poultry is on vaccines and drugs to prevent illness and maintain fl ock health. In the major markets of the US and Europe, annual broiler production is over 15 billion birds. The poultry industry in the fi rst world countries is highly concentrated and vertically integrated. For example, more than 90% of US broiler production is by the top 20 producer companies. Intensive rearing of tens of thousands of birds in large sheds presents management challenges for producers.

Over time with production effi ciencies and cost reductions, the retail price of chicken meat, in real terms, has reduced. Additionally, profi t margins have tightened and the poultry industry in advanced countries is recognised as a very progressive industry that utilises technologies and modern animal husbandry effi ciencies extensively to keep unit costs low. The major factors affecting poultry production margins are:
    • feed costs, • the amount of feed required to produce meat (Food Conversion Ratio - FCR), • husbandry labour costs including costs of administering disease treatments,
    • bird health and survival rates, • the cost of treatment and preventative medicines, • regulatory and ethical considerations. The key to successful intensive broiler production is to maximise bird health and weight gain in the shortest possible time for the least cost.
For many years antibiotics have been the principal prophylactic used to prevent bacterial infections in the intensive poultry rearing countries. Antibiotics are easily and relatively cheaply administered as feed additives, however, their benefi ts have been on the decline. Moreover, their use as growth promoters is being banned – In Canada and Europe antibiotics are banned from use in feed as growth promotants. In the US, only four antibiotics are approved for use in chicken feed. This regulatory ban, combined with public pressure for chicken meat free of drugs and chemicals, has increased the demand for alternative health enhancing and disease prevention products. Whist vaccines or chemical treatments do exist for diseases such as Bird Flu and Coccidiosis they have limitations either in effi cacy, safety, or cost of administration.
The Imugene vaccines are being developed as a viable alternative of next generation products for these markets. The Imugene vaccines are biological, safe, residue-free, contain no chemicals or antibiotics, can be produced cheaper than antibiotics and are inexpensively administered via water, feed, eggs or aerosol. These attributes are signifi cant advantages for the poultry producer and consumer.
