""The US had no involvement in Greece. To say so would diminish the efforts of the British, the NZ's and Aussies who did actually help the Greeks repel the Italian and German axis."
I have absolutely no beef with your comment
And yes, from my recall of WW2 history, the threat that the advancing Red Army posed to the Germans in Greece led to their withdrawal.
But it is an inescapable, irrefutable fact that without the US involvement in the European Theater, the war would have been lost
And if not lost and if the US not in the fight then Nazi hegemony would have been replaced by Russian hegemony!!!
Don't forget, Great Britain was on her knees - she was THIS close to losing the battle of the Atlantic in 1940.
Without the American convoy escort - which by the way predated the declaration of war and in so doing truely violated US neutrality not to mention i think it was 50 destroyers the Yanks gave Britian - it is most likely if not certain they'd of been forced to surrender.
Had Germany forced a surrender of Great Britain early in '41 it is not at all clear what the outcome of the war might have been.
Had Roosevelt not overtly and covertly supported Britain, the Soviets may very well have faced a German Army fighting a one front war, well supplied with Mid Eastern oil, not facing an around the clock Allied bombing campaign and with no Soviet ports open to lend/lease.
Sure lemur, the U.S. did not win WW2, nor did the Soviets; the Allies won WW2 in a combined effort.
Therein is the connection I was making to our greek buddys.
Whilst not a direct liberating act their involvement led inexorably to the downfall of the Third Reich and hence the liberation of not only Greece but all the other countries under the jack-boot!
