Nickel project is a win-win for Atlas
The US $1.88 billion Goro Nickel Project for Canadian mining company Inco will be one of the biggest nickel mines in the world. Atlas is proud to be a
key supplier of carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome molybdenum piping, fittings and flanges for the project, currently under construction in New Caledonia.
Once operating, Goro Nickel will have the capacity to produce approximately 80,000 tonnes of nickel a year. About 70% of this will be used in the
production of stainless steel. And it is that growing demand for stainless steel that drives the investment in Goro and other nickel projects around
the world.
Global demand for stainless steel has increased steadily at around 5-6% p.a. and now with rapid growth taking place across Asia, the need for
stainless steel and hence nickel has never been greater. Over the last 12 months the nickel price has reached unprecedented highs with supply
barely keeping pace with demand. The Goro project will become an essential source of much needed nickel required to satisfy the projected
growth of stainless steel consumption. So coincidentally, Atlas is supporting a project that will itself support Atlas to maintain its position as
the largest distributor of stainless steel in the Oceania Region.
With expectations that the Atlas/Goro supply agreement will run for another year, Altas has dedicated a project group in Melbourne to manage the
complexities associated with global sourcing and logistics. This group, part of the expanded Projects Services team, has the task of meeting stringent
supply demands of this large and challenging project. The team has established a supply network of approved production mills and suppliers,
and works closely with suppliers and client to schedule pipe and fitting manufacture and material supply to meet the tight project timelines.
With the world watching and eager for the new nickel capacity, it is expected that the project will be completed in 2007.
Inco is one of the global clients with whom Atlas Project Services has built a reputation for competency and consistency. In an ever challenging
and complex world, managing risk is never more important. For our clients Atlas can provide an assured service, and in return we will grow
with them and their success.
atlas builds on success in Thailand
Just over two years ago Atlas embarked on an expansion strategy to supply specialty metals to the growing economies of South East Asia.
After establishing a presence in Thailand, Managing Director of Bisalloy Thailand, Dick Anwar and his team set about servicing Thailand’s demands
for Bisplate quenched and tempered plate. Today Dick and his team have a market share of over 50%.
Having a strong presence in Thailand has enabled Dick to form sound relationships with other multi-national companies as they develop their businesses
in Thailand. Machine manufacturers, such as Australian firm Jacques, are among Dick’s main clients. Jacques use Bisplate to fabricate machinery
and equipment for tough, abrasive applications such as crushers and impactors which are exported around the world for use in the mining industry.
Dick’s success in servicing the Thai quenched and tempered market has led his business into other growth areas such as carbon and stainless steel
pipe and fittings. With the Atlas group supply chain now in place there is the competency platform to supply a much broader portfolio of products.
For example, as the Thai sugar industry continues to grow, Dick and his team are successfully introducing new materials for use in sugar processing
plants. Currently 46 sugar mills process 60 million tonnes of sugar cane pa, many of these mills are drawing upon Dick’s expertise when upgrading
or commissioning new sugar processing facilities.
The transformation of Bisalloy Thailand into Atlas Thailand, supplying and supporting the full specialty metals portfolio provides great opportunity
for growth. Atlas believes there are similar growth prospects for its Indonesian business as well as opportunities for entry into new markets.
