I was referring to short selling of fully paid stock being banned in any form, not the selling of ordinary shares overall as a market commodity.

Short selling is the sale of a security that is not owned by the seller, or that the seller has borrowed. Short selling is motivated by the belief that a security's price will decline, enabling it to be bought back at a lower price to make a profit.

It's the so called borrowing I don't agree with. If a trader believes a stock price will fall, then cover that in the options market, not drive the stock price down for their personal gain if they don't own it.

Yes, I agree Twin is talking about disclosure more so than shorting but in today's trading environment, the only disclosure one gets is if it is proven to be required at law.
