Phips have had the Hue under development for a long time, and have used the technology available at the time of design. There is a big gap between design, procurement and production. Up until recently they have run a chip by Atmel, who were early in jumping into the combined RF market.

I would suggest that it is a stepping stone to the final iteration of IoT, and that the chip type will definitely change as better technology becomes available.

I would agree with elit in the point he is making here - the Hue in the past has not been run by a Telink chip - but I bet it will be in the future - it will do the same as the Atmel chip, and more.
