Three points in response to comments above:

1. money spent on determining the people's wishes on one of the most important proposed social changes since federation can hardly be called "a waste of money". Quite the contrary

2. the poll changes show what happens when a left wing Liberal PM runs dead on the issue

3. to save money we could hold the plebsiscite either at the next election or when the referendum on indigenous recognition is planned
