Well, I agree with all your words except:

"Mr Abella would have learnt how to read and write if .........."

You would need to give him a brain transplant first.

It is a fact, that some kids cannot learn to read and write. That is the truth, mogga. Have you not considered that some people are Mildly Intellectually Retarded and yet still in "normal" schools? Why do you think there are "Special Schools" where intellectually retarded kids are referred and who then often attend these schools? Do you not understand that many of these kids have poor reading and writing skills. Medical know-how is so advanced that often babies who in earlier years would not have lived are now living and need to survive in our society, often with significant handicaps?

As part of a church committee, I have been closely involved in a group of people classified as having a Mildly Intellectual Disability. They live close to me in one of the church properties. I have come to know them very well and have lots to do with them. One of these people cannot read and write. I suspect another cannot either. There are people, mogga, who can breath and put their clothes on each day. They can put one foot in front of another and walk. However, they are close to being unteachable. They don't drive, or become employed in the outside world. That is a fact of life. The lady I know certainly has almost zero English skills. She was born with fluid on her brain and that has caused her permanent damage. One day I will write a book about what it is like to help look after these people because it seems they are not well understood. Their coping skills often lead to some quite funny things happening, sometimes things are not funny but just plain sad.

NOBODY can teach a person with an intellectual difficulty of the kind Beau has to read and write - NO-ONE. It is easier to see the Disabled person in a wheelchair and identify that as a disability, but intellectual disability is just as real although not as easy to identify as someone in a wheelchair. And one of our church residents is in that category and your Christian Brother (nor 1,000 Christian Brothers) cannot do what has not been done by a myriad of teachers. Simply NOT POSSIBLE.

I cannot help what you believe, mogga. You will hold those wrong beliefs of yours despite having no experience of teaching or dealing with intellectual retardation. You are simply in denial and want to believe something which is not true. Best I don't respond again on this topic.
