I have just caught up reading through the posts and see that Yaks are missing. I can guess along what lines he posted but would have liked to have read them anyway.
McNamara talked about Castros thoughts at the time of the crisis but nothing about what took place between Kennedy and Kruschev. Whatever Castro may have recommended, fortunately the final say lay with the cooler heads of Kruschev and Kennedy and what took place between them was crucial and the determining factor to the resolution of the crisis.
McNamara also seems to claim credit for the removal of the missiles from Turkey, and yet they too were crucial elements in the crisis, not only for the resolution of the crisis, but gave reason for the Soviets, having had missiles placed on their doorstep, to return the favour and place missiles on the US doorstep.
Whilst McNamara may have seen the light in later years, he was perhaps a bit too closely involved to be able to give a completely impartial account of what was happening in the bigger picture.
