Australia suffers from what economists call Dutch Disease. The commodity sector boom cycles kills off any other sectors.

Perhaps we should separate Australia into two countries: NSW+VIC versus everybody else. One country to focus on high tech and manufacturing.  The other country digs stuff out of the ground.  Think of it like a corporate spin-off off a poorly performing subsidiary.
