"At the Rotary organised ‘Meet the Candidates’ public meeting recently held at the Paeroa Memorial Hall, the two Mayoral candidates and the nine Paeroa Ward candidates were asked whether they were for or against mining in Karangahake Mountain. ALL the Ward candidates and John Tregidga said they were against mining in this special place. However, Mayoral candidate Conall Buchanan did not give a clear for or against statement. Our local body election closes on the 8th October, and it is important to vote. It is the local District Council that makes decisions around what activities are permitted in different areas, so if we want to put the brakes on mining in Karangahake then talk to the prospective candidates to see if they will support district plan changes that would make it much harder for gold mining companies to operate in our district."
