I don't think it's appropriate or moral for businesses to be unpaid tax collectors for the government. I spend several hours each quarter doing this, compulsorily.
What's more GST has a disproportionate effect on low income earners who have no way of reclaiming any of the GST they have been forced to pay. It is an unfair tax which is passed on down the line to those who can least afford it. It is also a cost which has proved inflationary to prices.
It is because of GST that Australia has become the highest taxing nation in the world.
Perhaps I wouldn't mind so much and would consider the unpaid hours I spend collecting Johnny's taxes for him were well spent if these taxes were distributed equitably and used for good purpose , but they aren't.
