That purity was for a 2.5L lab scale experiment. There are many issues that come about with scaling up a process. You might also want to consider exactly what proportion of the material was floating at the top with a a purity of 99%? if they are getting 96% purity and still maintaining 80% recovery this is a rather good outcome at this stage of development of the scaled up process.
