IBM says NextGen had “provided repeated assurances” it had appropriate geo-blocking measures in place. It later discovered that one of NextGen’s links — the key gateway that controlled the flow of traffic onto the eCensus platform — had not been “closed off” and was “saturated” for the duration of the fourth and largest attack, effectively creating a “hole” in Island Australia.
Vocus, which bought NextGen in June, “admitted the error” in a teleconference with IBM, NextGen and Telstra at 11pm on census night. “Had NextGen (and through it Vocus) properly implemented Island Australia, it would have been effective to prevent this DDoS attack and the effects it had on the eCensus site,” IBM says.
Have commented a number of times on the level of "she'll be right mate" attitude from the ranks within Nextgen. There was a sweep of VOC with a few lay-offs. The same needs to be done at Nextgen.
