With far greater consumption and a fragile environment, the damage is greater, even with fewer people. I think that you are equating open space with carrying capacity. Unfortunately they are not the same thing.
You might also consider that ground water resources are being used unsustainably in India and China. Comparatively, the average water consumption in Australia is about 15 times that of India. That is why a place like the Gold Coast, which does not seem crowded to you, will soon be piping some of its water from Brisbane.
