It should also be remembered that once something is in use and proves to be relatively cheap and reliable there is much less incentive to replace it. Improvements will happen but alternatives cost a lot and need to show significant gains to be worthwhile. The EV would not have been a useful alternative to the I/C Engine without a major improvement in batteries - and it looks like Lithium/ion is in the box seat to kick it off with a pretty reliable product.
