I beg to differ Brokerman!
When you invest, you must look at the whole picture!
You take your whole share portfolio, you take your investment rental properties, you take your retail business etc, etc.... And then finally, you work out your total income for the whole financial year. If you've sold a share & made a profit, you pay tax on it. If you've collected 200k rental & spent 20k on expenses, you pay tax accordingly. And finally if your retail business takes $1 M for the year, you work out your expenses & pay tax accordingly.
