Australia’s fourth largest mobile phone provider, Amaysim, has further consolidated its position in the market with more than a million customers now on its books.
The telco, which operates on Optus’s wholesale network, has hit the milestone six years after its inception, with chief executive and managing director Julian Ogrin saying that consistency of service has been key to its continued success.
“It all comes down to sustainability and consistency of the value we bring to the market.” Mr Ogrin said.
“Disruption on price doesn’t really mean anything without sustainability and this milestone validates our model.”
Amaysim’s combination of letting customers bring their own handsets when they join the network, no lock-in contracts and a simplified self-service experience has helped it survive the contraction in the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) market. According to Mr Ogrin, the telco has almost 30 per cent of the MVNO market and close to 3 per cent of overall mobile market share.
Amaysim posted a 19.2 per cent rise in net revenue to $253.5m in the year to June 30, with underlying earnings more than doubling to $35.4m. The acquisition of budget brand Vaya in January also helped the telco beef up its consumer base. Customer churn was down 2.5 per cent for the full year.
The telco is preparing to move beyond mobiles with its recent $4m acquisition of Australian Broadband Services, which operates a provisioning platform for ADSL and NBN services.
Amaysim is set to launch a beta test of its fixed service before Christmas and Mr Ogrin said it was focused on carving out a chunk of the budget-conscious market.
“We have no legacy margins to protect and are targeting a 3 to 5 per cent share of the market.”
Amaysim’s network partner Optus has applauded the telco’s achievement, with Rob Parcell, managing director Optus Wholesale, Satellite and SMB, admitting Amaysim had covered a lot of ground very quickly.
“The company is a strong case study in running a lean, sustainable and customer-centric MVNO,” Mr Parcell said.
